Adventure Awaits! Weddings for Couples Who'd Rather Be Outdoors

Not everyone dreams of a grand ballroom, a five-tier cake and a room full of a hundred guests.

Some couples would rather lace up their hiking boots than put on high heels. They'd choose mountain views over chandeliers, birdsong over a DJ, and a campfire over a dance floor.

If that sounds like you, an adventure wedding could be exactly what you've been searching for.

Adventure weddings are perfect for couples who feel most at home outdoors. They're ideal if you're a little introverted, not keen on being the centre of attention, or simply want your wedding day to feel like another incredible adventure you'll always remember.

Western Australia is packed with unforgettable places to say "I do."

Imagine standing on top of Bluff Knoll after climbing together before sunrise, exchanging your vows with breathtaking views stretching for miles.

Perhaps you're walking part of the Bibbulmun Track, stopping beneath towering trees to become husband and wife before continuing your journey together—quite literally.

You could hike a section of the Cape to Cape Track and say your vows overlooking the ocean, or gather around a campsite with just your closest family and friends as the kettle boils and breakfast cooks over the fire.

Maybe your adventure involves heading north to the incredible Pinnacles Desert, where sunset transforms the limestone pillars into something almost otherworldly.

Or perhaps you'll kick up a little sand at the Lancelin Sand Dunes before celebrating with a picnic as the sun sinks below the horizon.

If wide open spaces make your heart happy, point the car east. Just three or four hours from Perth, the Wheatbelt and Goldfields begin to reveal a completely different side of Western Australia. Around Merredin, Southern Cross and beyond, the landscape changes into rich red earth, hardy bushland and enormous salt lakes that seem to stretch forever. It's peaceful, dramatic and perfect for couples who love the road less travelled.

One thing to remember is that many beautiful outdoor locations require permission before holding a wedding ceremony. If you're planning to marry in a national park or another protected area, check with the local shire or the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) well before your wedding day so everything is organised properly.

Now... if your adventure includes skydiving, abseiling, bungee jumping or anything else guaranteed to get the adrenaline pumping, I'd recommend exchanging your vows either before or after the excitement.

As romantic as it sounds, it's surprisingly difficult to sign legal paperwork while hurtling through the sky with the wind rushing through your hair!

Remember too, Australian law requires your celebrant and two witnesses to be present to make your marriage official. If your adventure takes you across the countryside, we can always arrange to meet at one of the stopping points along your journey before you continue on your way.

One of my favourite things about adventure weddings?

Comfortable shoes!

No aching feet. No worrying about grass stains or muddy hems. No rules that say you have to wear a huge gown or an expensive suit.

Wear whatever feels like you.

That might be hiking boots, shorts and a favourite shirt, or perhaps you'll add just a little wedding magic with a flowing veil, a bouquet of wildflowers or a flower crown. There are no wedding police waiting to issue fashion fines—I promise.

Food can be just as relaxed as the day itself. Simmer a hearty stew over the campfire, cook sausages in a bun, bake fresh damper to spread with butter and jam, or indulge in that camping favourite—a cheeky squeeze of condensed milk straight from the tube. Somehow it always tastes better outdoors!

One final piece of advice—don't forget the photos.

Whether you ask a talented friend, hire a photographer who loves adventure, or organise someone to meet you along the way, you'll want beautiful photographs to remember the incredible places where your marriage began.

Adventure weddings remind us that the best celebrations don't always happen inside four walls.

Stardust Tip

The best wedding location isn't the most expensive one - it's the place where the two of you feel happiest. Whether that's a beach, a bush track, your own backyard or the top of a mountain, that's where the magic begins.
