Hear Ye! Hear Ye! By Royal Decree......you are cordially invited to witness the joining of two noble hearts!

If you've ever dreamed of stepping into another era, where knights were bold, ladies were... perhaps even bolder, and every celebration ended with a feast fit for royalty, then a Medieval or Renaissance - themed wedding could be your happily ever after.

The beauty of a themed wedding is that you don't have to follow anyone else's rules. You get to write your own story.

So...

Are you the elegant lady of the manor or the mischievous tavern maid?

Is your soulmate a gallant prince, a fearless knight... or perhaps a rather handsome blacksmith with impressive forearms?

Who says fairy tales have to be traditional?

One of the wonderful things about a medieval wedding is that you don't need a castle to create the atmosphere. A paddock, open field or even the local oval can become your own little kingdom for the day.

Picture colourful banners fluttering in the breeze, a medieval-style marquee standing proudly in the centre, and guests arriving in cloaks, tunics, gowns and flower crowns. Once everyone commits to the theme, the magic begins.

Just request that no modern clothes are allowed!

If you have talented friends or family, invite them to become part of the entertainment. Someone spinning wool, another demonstrating knitting or weaving, perhaps a blacksmith, woodcarver or leatherworker if you're lucky enough to know one. Gather them together beneath an open pavilion where they can chat, laugh and "cackle" away while your guests wander through and soak up the atmosphere.

Your reception can become a feast worthy of a king - or queen.

Forget tiny portions balanced artistically on oversized plates.

Think long rustic tables overflowing with delicious food. Slow-roasted beef, pork, lamb or chicken carved fresh from the spit. Roasted cauliflower, smoky vegetables, vegan roasts or plant-based ham for your vegetarian guests. Thick chunks of crusty bread, buttery potatoes, rich gravy, hearty pies and plenty of food to share.

Serve drinks in goblets if you can, raise a toast with mead or your favourite local wine, and let everyone settle in for an afternoon of storytelling, laughter and celebration.

Soft music drifting through the air from minstrels, fiddles or acoustic musicians adds another layer of enchantment. Before long you'll feel as though you've wandered back hundreds of years.

And when it comes to your Master of Ceremonies...

Choose the loudest, funniest person you know!

Every medieval feast deserves someone who isn't afraid to announce the next event with dramatic enthusiasm, keep everyone laughing and perhaps even declare a royal toast or two.

If you're looking for inspiration, Western Australia has some wonderful groups who are passionate about bringing history to life. The Grey Company in Bayswater and the College of Dragon's Bay, part of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), are fantastic places to discover ideas, costumes, demonstrations and historical activities.

If you really want to immerse yourselves before the big day, why not spend a weekend visiting one of WA's medieval festivals? The Balingup Medieval Carnivale in August and the Boddington Medieval Fayre & Feast are packed with costumes, music, markets, demonstrations and enough inspiration to fill an entire wedding planner.

At the end of the day, a medieval wedding is about gathering your favourite people around one enormous table, sharing good food, telling stories, laughing until your cheeks hurt and celebrating the beginning of your own epic tale.

Because every great adventure starts with two people saying...

"I choose you."

Stardust Tip

Don't worry about making everything historically perfect. This isn't a museum—it's your wedding! Borrow the parts you love, leave the bits you don't, and create a celebration that feels like your own legendary tale.
