Is vintage your style?

Do you oooh and aaah over old trains, historic buildings and beautiful old architecture? Could you happily spend hours wandering through museums, poking around antique shops and wondering about the stories behind all those wonderful old things?

 Then why not bring a little of that nostalgia into your wedding day?

 Vintage and heritage weddings are perfect for couples who love the romance of another era. And here in Western Australia, we have some gorgeous places that practically beg to become the setting for your "I do."

All aboard!

 If old trains make your heart go choo choo, you're in luck.

 Take a wander around the Midland Railway Workshops, explore the Railway Museum in Bassendean, or head out to Whiteman Park and investigate their vintage train rides. You might even be able to incorporate a train or railway setting into your ceremony or celebrations—it's certainly worth asking about their wedding and event spaces.

 Imagine arriving at your wedding by train.  Or having your photographs taken beside an old steam locomotive. Or perhaps your guests are waiting on the platform when the happy couple arrives...  Now that's an entrance!   (You don't necessarily need to hire an entire train to get that wonderful old-world feeling.

 The National Trust is a great place to start if you're looking for historic properties and heritage buildings. Perth and its surrounding suburbs are full of historic buildings that can provide a beautiful backdrop for your wedding. Think Perth Town Hall, Lamont's Bishops House, Moana Hall, the WA Museum, Fremantle Town Hall, Caversham House or gorgeous Woodbridge.

 And don't limit yourself to Perth!

 Some of Western Australia's beautiful country towns are only a short drive away and are full of charming old buildings, wide streets, country gardens and fascinating history.

 Think Toodyay, York, Northam, New Norcia, Yallingup, Busselton, Donnelly River and Balingup. There are so many possibilities once you start looking.

 Why not turn the search for your wedding venue into a little adventure? Take a road trip, wander around the towns, have lunch somewhere along the way and see what catches your eye.  You might just find your perfect wedding setting somewhere you weren't even looking.

Dress the part!

 One of the easiest ways to transform a vintage or heritage venue is to dress the part.  And this is where you can have so much fun.

 Perhaps you're dreaming of the elegance of the 1920s, the glamour of the 1940s, the romance of the Victorian era or something a little more relaxed and country.

 Maybe you want your guests in waistcoats, suspenders, lace, hats and gloves. 

 Perhaps this is your chance to have your Bridgerton moment—minus the pressure of actually behaving like respectable members of the ton!

 Or maybe you're more early settler than high society. Think simple country dresses, boots, braces, hats and wildflowers.

 Whatever era you choose, getting your guests involved really adds to the atmosphere. There's something rather wonderful about looking around your wedding and realising everyone has stepped into your little time machine with you.

Tea, cake... or a proper feast?

 Your catering can follow the theme too, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune.

 For a relaxed afternoon celebration, think delicate sandwiches, homemade slices, little cakes, jellies and a magnificent Queen Victoria sponge. Add tea served from pretty old-fashioned teapots and you've got yourself a rather lovely afternoon tea.

 Or perhaps you'd prefer a long-table dinner with hearty country food, beautiful old crockery and plenty of candlelight.

 A picnic on the lawn can feel just as charming as a fancy dinner in a grand hall.  It's all about choosing the things that make you happy.

And then there's Steampunk...

 Now, if you're a couple who looks at a vintage wedding and thinks, "Yes... but can we make it a little more bonkers?"

 Absolutely.

 Welcome to Steampunk.

 Think goggles, pocket watches, gears, leather, corsets, waistcoats, top hats, brass details and wonderfully imaginative inventions that probably don't actually do anything but look fantastic.

 Old railway buildings and workshops make an especially wonderful backdrop for this kind of wedding.  You could have mechanical-looking decorations, vintage suitcases, old clocks, maps, lanterns and curious contraptions scattered around your venue.

 And nobody can tell you that your wedding isn't historically accurate because...

 Well, it's Steampunk.

The wonderful thing about a vintage or heritage wedding is that you don't have to recreate history perfectly.  Choose the bits you love.

 Perhaps it's the romance of steam trains. Maybe it's the elegance of an old ballroom. Perhaps you love country life, old machinery, antique treasures or simply the feeling that comes from being somewhere with a story.

 Take those things and make them part of your story.  Your wedding doesn't have to look like everyone else's, it can look like the two of you.

Don't be afraid to visit places simply because you think "They probably don't do weddings." Ask! You might be surprised by what is available. And sometimes the most memorable wedding venues are the places that weren't originally designed to be wedding venues at all.
