Indulge your whimsy with a Fairy or Woodland Themed Wedding

Have you ever dreamed of getting married in a magical woodland, where the only soundtrack is birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves overhead?

One of the wonderful things about Western Australia is that we're spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful natural settings. Down south you'll find the magnificent Tingle forests around Walpole, the Giant Trees near Manjimup, and gorgeous spots throughout Donnelly River, Nannup, Bridgetown and Pemberton.

Closer to Perth, there are plenty of equally enchanting locations. Kings Park and Botanic Garden is an obvious favourite, while John Forrest National Park, Mundy Regional Park with Lesmurdie Falls and Whistlepipe Gully, Kalamunda National Park, Beelu National Park near Mundaring, Araluen Botanic Park in Roleystone, Brookleigh Estate in the Swan Valley and the Gnangara Pines all have their own unique charm.

My advice? Make a day of it. Pack a picnic, jump in the car, and spend a weekend exploring. You never know when you'll stumble across the place that makes you both look at each other and say, "This is it."

One of the best things about a woodland wedding is that nature has already done most of the decorating for you. Towering trees, wildflowers, dappled sunlight and birdsong create a backdrop that no decorator could ever replicate.

You don't need elaborate styling either. I once attended a beautiful ceremony where the aisle was simply marked with handmade bunting strung between tent poles. It was charming, relaxed and perfectly suited to the surroundings.

Create your own whimsical ceremony space with vintage rugs, rustic wooden signs, lanterns, wildflowers, ribbons or fairy lights (where permitted). Guests can sit on picnic rugs or cushions before enjoying a relaxed morning tea, picnic lunch or afternoon celebration together.

The menu can be just as playful. Think fairy bread (because adults deserve fairy bread too!), tiny cupcakes, fresh fruit, colourful lollies, honey joys, slices and dainty sandwiches cut into quarters. Delicious, nostalgic and easy to enjoy outdoors.

If you'd like to fully embrace the theme, invite your guests to join the fun. Flowing dresses, flower crowns, waistcoats, suspenders or even a pair of fairy wings can make for some unforgettable photos. A harpist, violinist or acoustic guitarist quietly playing amongst the trees adds an extra touch of magic. Consider adding a hand fasting to your ceremony.

For wedding favours, consider something your guests can enjoy long after the day is over. Native wildflower seed packets, handmade soaps, little candles or tiny jars of local honey are thoughtful keepsakes that suit the woodland feel beautifully.

Before you fall completely in love with a national park, remember to check what's required. Many parks need permits or event approval through the Parks and Wildlife Service, and they often have "leave no trace" or zero-impact guidelines. That usually means no rice throwing, balloon releases, attaching decorations to native trees or leaving anything behind.

And don't forget to think outside the usual venues. Someone in your family or circle of friends might own a beautiful bush block or rural property that's perfect for a relaxed woodland celebration.
