Catering on a Budget? There are more options than you think!

Who decided weddings have to start at 4pm and end with a three-course meal?

One of the biggest wedding expenses can be feeding everyone. But here's a little secret...

You don't have to have an evening reception. You don't have to serve a formal sit-down meal. You don't even have to have expensive catering if that's not where you want your money to go.

Your wedding should reflect you, your personalities, your budget and what makes you smile.

Consider a Different Time of Day

Venues are often much cheaper if you book them during quieter times.

Think about:

A Thursday or Friday wedding instead of a Saturday.

A Sunday brunch.

A weekday lunch.

A morning ceremony followed by breakfast.

An afternoon tea celebration complete with scones, slices and plenty of tea (or champagne!).

Many venues offer lower hire fees during off-peak times, and caterers often have more flexibility too. That's money you can put towards your honeymoon, your first home...or simply leave safely in the bank.

A Wedding Feast Made With Love

One of my favourite budget-friendly ideas came from a couple who asked each family or household to bring a dish to share.  Before you panic—this isn't about asking your guests to do all the work. It's about creating a celebration that feels like one big family gathering.

With a little organisation, you can coordinate who brings what so you end up with a wonderful variety of food.

And let's be honest...

If Aunty Annette makes the world's greatest vegetable bake, why wouldn't you want that at your wedding?

Imagine a beautiful buffet table filled with everyone's favourite family recipes.

Each dish could have a little card saying:

"Made with love by Aunty Annette"

Contains: dairy, gluten and enough cheese to feed a small village.

It's personal, meaningful and often becomes one of the things guests remember most.

Match the Food to the Time

The beauty of choosing your own timetable is that your menu can be anything you like.

Morning wedding?

Think pastries, fruit, yoghurt, bacon and egg rolls, pancakes or a delicious breakfast buffet.

Brunch?

Fresh salads, quiches, pastries, cheeses, fruit platters and coffee.

Lunch?

Roast meats with fresh bread rolls, salads or a relaxed barbecue.

Afternoon tea?

Slices, cupcakes, scones with jam and cream, sandwiches and plenty of sweet treats.

Cocktail reception?

Finger food, grazing tables, canapés and bite-sized delights that keep everyone mingling.

There really are no rules.

Let Your Theme Inspire Your Menu

This is where weddings become wonderfully fun. If you've chosen a theme, why not let the food join in too?

Fairy, Woodland or Whimsical

Think fairy bread, tiny cupcakes, picnic baskets, fruit, colourful sweets and magical little treats.

Beach Wedding

Fresh sandwiches, seafood, salads, tropical fruit, picnic rugs and relaxed grazing platters.

Adventure Lovers

A barbecue, campfire cooking, hearty food and rustic desserts.

Gamers

Create snack stations filled with favourite treats, popcorn, pizza, sliders and nostalgic lollies.

Sci-Fi Fans

Whether you're into Star Wars, Star Trek or another galaxy entirely, themed foods, clever menu names and even guests in costume can create an unforgettable experience. Some cosplay groups even love helping bring these worlds to life.

Medieval or Renaissance

Picture a ceremony beneath the trees followed by roast meats, rustic bread, cheese, fruit and long shared tables that feel like an old-world feast.

The food becomes part of the story you're telling.

The Best Weddings Feel Like Home

I've been privileged to celebrate weddings with elegant dinners, food trucks, backyard barbecues, picnics under gum trees and morning tea in community halls.

Every single one was perfect because it reflected the couple.

The truth is, your guests won't remember whether you served beef Wellington or sausage rolls.

They'll remember the laughter.

The conversations.

The hugs.

The way you looked at each other.

Those are the moments that last.

So, if you're planning your wedding on a budget, don't ask yourself, "What's a normal wedding?"

Ask instead:

"What feels like us?" Because that's where the real magic begins.
